Chionodoxa luciliae 'Alba'
Chionodoxa luciliae 'Alba'
Chionodoxa luciliae alba (or Scilla) is originally from western Turkey. With luciliae in the name, Lucile Boissier is honoured. She was the wife of the Swiss botanist Pierre Edmond Boissier (1810-1885).
Each bulb produces 2-3 narrow leaves and an erect flower stem which in early spring is topped with loose racemes of 2-3 pure white star-shaped upward facing flowers. Excellent for naturalising. Plant them in numbers.
Not only does it look beautiful, but you also provide (early) bees and bumblebees with a wide range of food. They will also find your Chionodoxa in your border or pot. Fun fact, it may be that the bulb is deeper than planted. This is because Chionodoxas have a watery root that pulls the bulbs down.
Flowers in February-March
