Muscari armeniacum (grape hyacinth)
Muscari armeniacum (grape hyacinth)
Height: 20 cm
Blooms: April
Muscari is native to Turkey, Greece, Bulgaria and the Caucasus. The name is derived from the Greek word moschos which means musk and refers to the scent. The species name armeniacum is derived from Armenia, a mountainous country in the South Caucasus.
Muscari armeniacum is better known as grape hyacinth. A cheerful perennial bloomer with striking blue flowers that are easily propagated. Each plant has two to three elongated leaves, the back of which is colored dark green and the top has a light bluish-green color. The bell-shaped cobalt blue flowers grow in spike-shaped clusters that later develop into loose-flowered clusters. The flowers are decorated with a graceful small white edge, which gives the whole a delicate appearance. Decorative seed pods appear after flowering.
The grape hyacinth likes a sunny spot in moist, well-drained soil, but also does well under trees or shrubs. Plant them in numbers for a beautiful blue sea in your garden or cheer up your borders with small groups. Ideally suited for planting in a pot for both indoors and outdoors.
