Height: 15 cm
Blooms: March-April
The Oriental Star Hyacinth. In early spring, 3 to 4 stems sprout from each bulb with clusters of intense, almost fluorescent blue flowers with a dark midrib. The small plant with its cheerfully nodding racemes was voted flower bulb of the year in 2010. It feels at home in moderately nutrient-rich, permeable but moist soil. As with all bulbs, once the flowers have finished blooming, leave the leaves until they die. With the help of the leaves, the plant collects energy in the bulb to flower again next year. Sometimes the Scilla naturalises by self-sowing seed.
The plant is hardy as the name suggests and can withstand drought. A small bloomer, but an incredible eye-catcher and bee-attractor.
